About the Course:

Winter 21: History 289A: Seminar in Chinese History: Excavated Manuscripts

This is the first part of a two-quarter research seminar, focusing on excavated manuscripts as a source for early Chinese history.  The quarter surveys all the major collections of manuscripts, including the oracle bones of the Shang, Zhou bronze inscriptions, Qin and Han legal texts, administrative, ritual, and literary texts.  Students will be expected to have a research proposal and bibliography by the end of the quarter. Reading knowledge of Chinese is expected.
