Nicolás Becerra Urrego is a PhD student in the History Department as the University of California, Santa Barbara. He holds a BA in East Asian and African Studies (Autonomous University of Madrid), and a MA in Transcultural Studies (Kyoto University / Heidelberg University). His work focuses on modern Japanese agriculture and migration, and their intersection to the processes of empire expansion and nation-building, with a particular interest to the Japanese diaspora in Colombia. His work has been previously funded by the UCSB History Associates, the Latin American and Iberian Studies Program, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Orfalea Center for Global & International Studies.
