Hi, all!

I am a historian of Japanese imperialism and its intersection with government-led migration campaigns to the Americas in the 1920s and 1930s. Currently, I am researching how Japanese colonial boosters described and promoted Colombia and other spaces of Latin America as ideal permanent destinations for a perceived “surplus” Japanese population (i.e. landless rural families, burakumin, political activists) in colonial magazines. Through my scholarship, I set out to better understand the relevance of Latin America to Japanese national politics in the interwar period, how the space of the Japanese Empire was discursively constructed, and the impact that these migration campaigns had on local economies and landscapes in the Americas.
