The Magnesian Gate in Ephesos: New Research on the Main City Gate

April 16, 2008 @ 12:00 am

The so-called Magnesian Gate is a component of the oldest city walls of Ephesos, which date to the Hellenistic period and served as the main entry into the city until late antiquity. This presentation will examine the chronology of the architecture and the various functions of this location, first as a waystation on the sacred processional route in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, then as a cemetery in late antiquity.
Alexander Sokolicek is director of the Magnesian gate project under the aegis of the Ephesos excavations of the Austrian Archaeological Institute. He holds an M.A. (1997) and Ph.D. (2003) from the University of Vienna, in the combined course of Classical Archaeology, Ancient History, Epigraphy, Papyrology and Ancient Numismatics. His research interests concern fortifications and urban studies in the ancient Mediterranean.

A reception will follow the talk. For more information, please contact Elizabeth Digeser in the History Department.

This event is sponsored by the Ancient Borderlands Research Focus Group.
