What did it mean for a nation to hold dear the institutions of marriage and slavery at the same time that marriage granted no legal standing for the enslaved? Hunter’s talk will look at the dilemmas and entanglements produced for slave, free black, and ex-slave intimate relationships throughout the nineteenth century.
