“‘God Made Marriage but the White Man Made the Law’: Slavery and Marriage in the Nineteenth Century”

Tera Hunter, Professor of History and African-American Studies, Princeton University

Hull Lecture, co-sponsored by UCSB New Racial Studies, Women’s Center, and the Departments of Black Studies and History

What did it mean for a nation to hold dear the institutions of marriage and slavery at the same time that marriage granted no legal standing for the enslaved? Hunter’s talk will look at the dilemmas and entanglements produced for slave, free black, and ex-slave intimate relationships throughout the nineteenth century.
