Charles-François Mathis Professor of Contemporary History (Professeur des universités)

Professor Charles François Mathis, Professor of Contemporary History (Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne) and author of numerous works on European environmental history, will address two of his important new publications in his talk, generously funded by the French consulate in Los Angeles. In La Civilisation du Charbon (2021), set to appear from Bloomsbury in English translation in 2025, he discusses how coal shaped culture and daily experience in Britain from 1830 to 1940. He is also one of a team of authors working on an environmental history of France (1780-present), set to appear in 3 volumes in 2025.
