An Evening with Librarian of Congress James Billington

October 25, 2011 @ 12:00 am

UCSB HISTORY ASSOCIATES
Special Event: ‘A Life for the Books’
An Evening with Librarian of Congress James Billington
Sponsored by the Friends of the Library of the Santa Ynez Valley

Solvang Brewing Company
1547 Mission Dr., Solvang

When he became the 13th Librarian of Congress in 1987, Dr. James
Billington had never heard of the iPad, Kindle, Smart phones or the Google
digital book project. Of course, that’s because none of them existed. Join
us for this special evening to hear what it was like to run the largest
and most diverse library in the world during a period of the greatest
changes in publishing technology since the invention of moveable type.
We will begin with dinner and an illustrated lecture on the history of the
Library of Congress by UCSB’s own Dr. Bev Schwartzberg, followed
by Dr. Billington’s public lecture in the nearby Veterans Memorial Hall.

Mission Dr. is Route 246, the main street in Solvang. The
Solvang Brewing Company is located at 1547 Mission,
next to the big windmill and Paula’s Pancake House. The
Veterans Memorial Hall is located at 1745 Mission, adjacent
to the Solvang Library. It has ample parking.

Dr. Billington’s public lecture will begin at 7 p.m.
Please reserve your space(s) @ $25 (HA members and guests) $30 (non-members)
