1) History Dissertation Fellowship
One quarter of department support for full-time dissertation research/writing. The fellowship includes a stipend of $7500 plus payment of in-‐state fees and health insurance (fees+health currently $5300). Students may hold this fellowship no more than twice in their graduate careers.
Fellowship recipients are chosen on the basis of academic performance and promise, the scholarly significance and expected contributions of their research, and the clarity and feasibility of their research plans for the proposed fellowship period.
Eligibility:
- Students who are not ABD at the time of application must provide verification (in writing from the advisor) that they will take qualifying exams by the end of summer quarter preceding the coming academic year.
- Students in P3 status (more than nine quarters past advancement) are ineligible.
To Apply:
- Instructions will be distributed with the general call for continuing student fellowship applications, generally in winter quarter each year. Applications generally consist of a research statement, c.v., and a letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor.

2) Department Teaching Assistantship
Appointments range from one to three quarters in an academic year. These are merit-based awards based on academic performance and promise. Students who have been teaching assistants in the past are assessed on teaching performance, based on evaluations by students and supervising professors.
Eligibility:
- Students who have not met TA training attendance requirements are ineligible.
To Apply:
- If you have previously been a TA in any UCSB department, you will be asked to submit a printed summary of your ESCI scores; these are available from the HASC Front Desk Administrative Assistant in HSSB 4001 (805-893-5681). Additional instructions will be provided along with the general call for continuing student fellowship applications, and generally consist of a research statement, c.v., and a letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor.

General Guidelines for Fellowships/Assistantships
CV Guidelines:
- CV should be a maximum of two pages, single spaced.
- Please use the CV template posted on the History graduate funding web page.
Research Statement Guidelines:
- Research statement should be a maximum of two pages, single spaced.
- Write for a broad audience of historians who may not be familiar with the historiography and terminology of your particular field.
- If you are at the dissertation stage, describe the purpose and significance of your research. You may include objective(s) of study, background/content of investigation, research approach and procedures, schedule of research, your qualification and preparations for this project, anticipated results and significance of results.
- If you are not yet ABD or do not have a defined dissertation topic, explain your current progress in the program, including coursework, papers written, and developing research interests.
Letter of Recommendation Guidelines:
- If you are not ABD at the time you apply for a dissertation fellowship, remind your advisor that he/she must verify in writing that you will take your exams by the end of summer quarter before the coming academic year.
