An even dozen of new students entered the department’s graduate program this Fall.
The biggest group was five students who will be studying topics in U.S. history. Doug Genens will work with Prof. Alice O’Connor, Will Murphey with Prof. Nelson Lichtenstein and Elise Finkel with both Profs. O’Connor and Lichtenstein. Dana Hughes will be surpervised by Prof. Ann Plane and Rana Razek by Prof. Salim Yaqub. Also, James Williams will work in Public History with Prof. Randy Bergstrom.
Two students were admitted to study modern European history and the history of science. Sergey Saluschev will work with Prof. Adrienne Edgar and Julie Johnson with Prof. Erika Rappaport. Jonathan Lee will be upervised by Prof. Patrick McCray and Angelica Marquez by Profs. Gabriela Soto Laviaga and Peter Alagona.
Rounding out the class, Thomas Franke will study medieval Europe with Profs. Debra Blumenthal and Carol
Lansing, and Kevin Wilson east Asia with Prof. Tony Barbieri-Low.
This year’s class is abouthalf the size of classes that were admitted a decade ago, in keeping with a departmental policy adopted in 2011 to limit the number of graduate students to those who could realistically
be funded for most if not all of their studies.
Teaching assistantships are the department’s primary means of graduate funding, with a more limited amount
available for fellowships.
