DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our second Gender + Sexualities Paper Workshop of the Winter Quarter on Thursday\, 16 February\, at 2 PM.  \nWe will meet in HSSB 4041 to discuss Kristen Thomas-McGill’s paper\, “Reputation and Habitual Misbehavior on a ‘Spicy Little Isle Where Ladies were Few.’” \nYou can find a copy of Kristen’s paper here. Please read the paper in advance and be prepared to share your observations and insights with the group. All are welcome. \nABSTRACT: In 1903\, the Governor of Ceylon learned that a 16-year-old British boy had accused Hector Macdonald\, the colony’s highest-ranking military official\, of sexual abuse. As further allegations of Macdonald’s “habitual crime of misbehavior” arose\, imperial officials in the metropole and the colonies wrestled with how to address the growing scandal. At stake was not only Macdonald’s reputation but also that of British governance across the globe. In this paper\, I consider the ways in which the archive has variously replicated or resisted the reputational politics that guided the government’s response 120 years ago and argue that these archival practices have fostered widespread misunderstanding of the Macdonald scandal among historians and the public.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the The Center for the Study of Work\, Labor\, and Democracy‘s Winter Quarter speaker series\, Grace Peña Delgado (History\, UC Santa Cruz) will present “Mexico’s New Slavery: A Critique of Neo-Abolitionism to Combat Human Trafficking.” Delgado is the author of Making the Chinese American: Global Migration\, Localism\, and Exclusion in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands (2012) and co-author of Latino Immigrants in the United States (2011). Delgado participates in the Arts and Humanities Research Council’s Project on Trafficking\, Smuggling\, and Illicit Migration in Historical and Gendered Perspective. SUMMARY:Ronny Regev\, "'We Want No More Economic Islands': The Mobilization of the Black Consumer Market in the Postwar US"
DESCRIPTION:On February 14 Ronny Regev (History\, Hebrew University of Jerusalem) presents\, “‘We Want No More Economic Islands’: The Mobilization of the Black Consumer Market in the Postwar US.” \nWWII ushered in an era of economic growth in the United States\, which enshrined consumption as an integral part of liberal citizenship. African Americans were often excluded from the benefits of this “affluent society\,” due to the prevalence of segregation and discrimination in the name of white supremacy. Still\, throughout the 1940s and 1950s\, a network of black intellectuals and business leaders promoted their own vision of economic abundance. By emphasizing the power of the “black market\,” the Afro-American economic elite advocated for a black consumer society\, in which black shoppers used their buying power to promote racial uplift. Following the full contours of the African American consumer discourse reveals that the preoccupation with the black shopper turned this mundane identity into a political category and marked the commercial realm as a viable arena in the struggle for civil rights. \nDr. Regev is the author of Working in Hollywood: How the Studio System Turned Creativity into Modern Labor (2018)\, and is a scholar of modern popular culture and its intersection with mass media industries and US labor relations. \nStudents in any discipline may receive credit in History 294 for participating in this workshop. \nClick here to download the flyer for this event.

Professor Hartman is currently at work on a third book\, Karl Marx in America\, to be published by the University of Chicago Press. The winner of two Fulbright Awards\, Hartman was the founding President of the Society for U.S. Intellectual History. DESCRIPTION:Rosie Cano Bermudez is a doctoral candidate in the department of Chicana and Chicano studies at UC Santa Barbara. Her dissertation “Doing Dignity Work: Alicia Escalante and the East Los Angeles Welfare Rights Organization\, 1967-1974\,” focuses on the human dignity struggles waged by single Chicana welfare mothers in East Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s at the confluence of multiple social movements. Her research interests are centered on the histories of Chicana and Mexican American women’s activism\, identity\, and feminisms during the second half of the Twentieth century in Los Angeles. SUMMARY:Marriage and Ritual Performance among the Servants of the Babylonian Gods
DESCRIPTION:Talk by Bastian Still\, Leiden University \nWith more than 50\,000 legal-administrative cuneiform tablets\, the so-called Neo-\nBabylonian Period (c. 625-484 BCE) is one of the best-documented periods in the\nhistory of Mesopotamia\, the region between Tigris and Euphrates. Unfortunately\,\nthis invaluable and very rich material rarely finds use in wider social-historical\ndiscourses\, as cuneiform specialists still engage predominantly in conventional\ninvestigations of philological\, juridical and economic nature. Attempts to further the\nfield of Assyriology by providing much needed social perspectives are still strikingly\nmissing with the result that the complex fabric of this ancient society as a whole\nremains a poorly understood subject of research – this is particularly obvious in the\nstudy of Babylonian marriage. \nThis talk presents a novel approach to marriage in Babylonian society of the\nmid-first millennium BCE\, based on a combination of social network analysis\,\nsociological theory and anthropological studies.  Focusing on priests in the city of Borsippa\, \nthe talk reveals how marriage practices helped shape not only the social order of the community but also the daily cult activities of the temple of Borsippa.
