DESCRIPTION:The Gender + Sexualities Cluster is pleased to welcome Professor Marc Stein to campus. Marc is a historian of U.S. law\, politics\, and society\, with research and teaching interests in constitutional law\, social movement \ns\, gender\, race and sexuality. His books and articles have focused on twentieth-century urban gay and lesbian history; U.S. Supreme Court decisions on sex\, marriage and reproduction; queer political activism; and sexual politics in the discipline of history. \nCoffee on Campus with Marc Stein. This causal event is exclusively for our undergrad students and will be co-hosted by the History Club and the Undergraduate Journal. Come learn about Marc’s career and work as a historian of sexuality.  \nCaffeine and snacks will be served.

SUMMARY:Monumental Mausolea: Building Projects and Slave Labor from Antiquity to the World Cup
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Bond\, Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Iowa\, will examine the use of slave labor in monumental building through a broad historical lens. The use of contracted and slave labor for large building projects has roots going back to antiquity. The Pyramids at Giza\, the Baths of Caracalla\, the Great Wall of China\, and\, now\, the sports arenas being erected for the Qatar World Cup in 2022 have all relied upon thousands of workers in order to build these monumental structures. Despite the hands of thousands contributing to the creation of these landmark buildings\, the lives of the contracted workers\, slaves\, and freed-persons who labored and often died while working on them have been largely invisible. This lecture examines the politics of celebrating a building such as the Colosseum or the White House while disregarding the contributions and sacrifices of the slaves that made these works possible. It also asks: what new landscapes of memory\, commemoration\, and public appreciation can be created when we notify the public of the extensive input of slaves? \nSponsored by the IHC’s Slavery\, Captivity\, and the Meaning of Freedom RFG\,  the Dept. of Classics\, the Public History Program\,  and the IHC’s Ancient Borderlands RFG. \n

SUMMARY:Beyond Hebrew: Zionism and the Politics of Multilingualism in Palestine\, 1920-1948
DESCRIPTION:Event Description:\nThe promotion of modern Hebrew as a spoken vernacular is often viewed as a central accomplishment of the Zionist movement in Palestine before Israeli statehood. But by viewing twentieth-century history through the lens of language\, author Liora Halperin questions the common narrative of a Zionist move away from multilingualism during the years following World War I. She demonstrates how Jews in Palestine remained connected by both preference and necessity to a world of languages outside the boundaries of the pro-Hebrew community even as many of them promoted Hebrew and achieved that language’s dominance. \nThe story of language encounters in the Jewish community of Palestine is a fascinating tale of shifting power relationships\, both locally and globally. Halperin’s absorbing study explores how a young national community was compelled to modify demands for Hebrew exclusivity as it negotiated its relationships with its diverse Jewish population\, Palestinian Arabs\, the British\, and others outside the margins of the national project and ultimately came to terms with the limitations of its influence and power in an interconnected world. \n  \nAbout the Speaker:\nLiora R. Halperin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History and the Program in Jewish Studies and the holder of the Endowed Professorship in Israel/Palestine Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder\, where she has taught since 2013. Her research focuses on Jewish cultural history\, Jewish-Arab relations in Ottoman and Mandate Palestine\, language ideology and policy\, and the politics surrounding nation formation in Palestine in the years leading up to the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. She is also a member of the advisory board for CU’s Archive of Post-Holocaust American Judaism\, and affiliated faculty in Middle Eastern Studies at the CU Center for Asian Studies. \n  \nSponsored by the Center for Middle East Studies and Jewish Studies at UCSB.
